In the 1948 setting of Los Angeles, World War II veteran Ezikeal Easy Rawlins is desperately seeking employment. At a bar owned by his friend Joppy, he is introduced to a white man named DeWitt Albright, who is in search of a missing white woman believed to be hiding within the Black community of LA. The woman, Daphane Monet, is the fiancée of Todd Carter, a wealthy and influential figure vying for the position of mayor.
Intrigued by the proposition, Easy agrees to help Albright, unaware of the danger that lies ahead. He soon becomes entangled in a web of murder, corrupt police officers, cunning politicians, and violent criminals. As an African-American, Easy finds himself navigating through a city marked by racial tension, where black jazz clubs serve as the backdrop for this thrilling tale reminiscent of the works of Chandler.
